Follow link for a great BBC video.  Silver sensation seeks cold cosmos

Stare into the curve of Herschel's mirror too long and you get a slightly giddy feeling that comes from not being able to judge where its surface really starts.

It is enchanting, spectacular and - at 3.5m in diameter - it will soon become the biggest telescope mirror in space, surpassing that of Hubble.

The great 18th Century astronomer William Herschel would have been astonished by the silver sensation that now bears his name.

The European Space Agency (Esa) is certainly very proud of its new observatory. It has been working on the venture for more than 20 years.

"The mirror is an enormous piece of hardware," enthused Thomas Passvogel, Esa's programme manager on the Herschel space observatory.

"It's a ceramic mirror; it's the biggest piece ever made from silicon carbide. It's very hard but much, much lighter than glass and the performance is excellent."

Apparently people are consulting angels on business deals, and frauds are raking in the dough. No wonder our economy sucks.

There I said it.

Update. Well, my optimism may have been misplaced. Since we broadcast out of the studios of KRFC, studio time is a bit limited.and I don't have the necessary equipment at home. I still haven't found a spot during my waking hours to edit my shows. Even tonight, at 10:30 pm, someone was in there! Who would use a studio that late? (Besides me, of course.) Ah well. As soon as I can actually get into the studio you'll start hearing new audio.

Good news for those of you who follow our podcast, By the end of the week all of our new episodes should be online. Many of you may be unaware of our new format. The 20 minute skeptical blurbs have replaced with an hour long show featuring interviews, news and opinion. Around the same time we started that we switched to a new website software. As a result, I had no idea how to post new podcasts. Now everything will be posted here on a regular schedule as well as iTunes. Enjoy.

No Libel Laws in Science

The use of the English libel laws to silence critical discussion of medical practice and scientific evidence discourages debate, denies the public access to the full picture and encourages use of the courts to silence critics. The British Chiropractic Association has sued Simon Singh for libel. The scientific community would have preferred that it had defended its position about chiropractic through an open discussion in the medical literature or mainstream media.
