Good news everyone! Torchwood is back!
For the unaware, Torchwood is the excellent Doctor Who spin-off featuring Capt. Jack Harkness and his team as they face off against alien invasions and the like.
John Barrowman first appeared on Doctor Who and became an immediate hit for his portrayal of the bisexual, action oriented con man and time traveler Capt. Jack. As the first bisexual character to achieve hero status in England, and with the overwhelmingly positive response by viewers his own spin-off was guaranteed. In fact, gay rights groups in England and abroad credit John Barrowman (who is gay) as being a major force in eradicating homophobia. Capt. Jack is just so cool even unrepentant bigots have trouble not loving him.
Social change aside, Torchwood is a brilliant show. Action packed, funny and (unlike Doctor Who) intended for a mature audience it's one of the best sci-fi shows on air. And don't be afraid of the legendary low BBC budgetary practices. This show looks great. The days of British actors being chased by tin foil clad aliens have passed.
Torchwood returns today in England and July 20th on BBC America. Instead of a typical thirteen episode series, we're getting a five part miniseries airing consecutively. I can't wait.

I should point out that there were four radio episodes prior to this miniseries. The first one takes place at the LHC!

No Libel Laws in Science

The use of the English libel laws to silence critical discussion of medical practice and scientific evidence discourages debate, denies the public access to the full picture and encourages use of the courts to silence critics. The British Chiropractic Association has sued Simon Singh for libel. The scientific community would have preferred that it had defended its position about chiropractic through an open discussion in the medical literature or mainstream media.
