Sodium, usually found in common salt, has received a bad rap over the years as the cause of many health problems in the human body. While it can cause those problems, you have to abuse its use in order to experience them.
Your diet should contain some level of sodium. The only way to avoid sodium in your diet is if you have explicit instructions from your doctor, to do so. However, your body will benefit more from having the recommended levels of sodium in your diet than from its absence.
So, why should your diet contain sodium?
It helps to regulate pH levels
Your body requires certain levels of pH in order to perform its basic functions. If you have too much acid or alkali in your body, some of your cells may start dying out. You do not need a diagram to figure what will happen to your body, do you?
Sodium is therefore an important part of your diet. It will ensure that your blood pH levels remain stable, thus keeping you alive and well.
It helps regulate water levels
The amount of sodium you have in your body regulates the water levels in it. If you have low sodium levels, you may end up drinking more water because your body feels dehydrated, even when it is not. That will end up causing over-dilution of sodium ions, which may be fatal.
Sodium affects how your kidney works, which is why it has an impact on water levels in the body. Therefore, if you want your kidneys to work properly, and your cells to function normally, your diet should contain the recommended levels of sodium. A diet of that nature will keep you healthy, your cells alive, and kidney stones away.
It helps muscles contract properly
Sodium has an impact in the way your heart works. Because it regulates blood pressure, it helps your heart function normally. Electrolyte imbalance, which is caused by low sodium intake in your diet, will cause muscle cramps, because of dehydration. Ensure therefore, that you stay alive and mobile by enhancing salt intake in your diet.
It helps your nerves to function properly
The amount of sodium that you have will affect how your nerves transmit messages in the body. You need some level of sodium in order to ensure that there is proper nerve transmission. Lack of enough sodium even causes your brain to become fuzzy and lethargic. You will end up confused since there will be limited brain development
You should therefore always ensure that your diet has sodium. Healthy foods that contain sodium and should be part of your diet include eggs, spinach and kale, beet, celery and carrots among others.
